How To Set Up GatewayVPN On Chromecast

With most Chromecast models, you can’t run a VPN directly on the device—so the usual approach is to put the VPN on the network your Chromecast uses (router, hotspot, or a computer that shares its VPN connection). Also, casting typically works best when your phone/tablet and Chromecast are on the same Wi-Fi network.

Method 1: Set up GatewayVPN on your router (recommended)

This is the most stable option for streaming and the simplest long-term setup.

Steps

  1. Confirm your router supports a VPN client
  2. Set up GatewayVPN on your router using our router guide (no need to repeat it here):

  3. Connect the Chromecast to that router
    • Use the Google Home app to set Chromecast’s Wi-Fi network (if needed).
  4. Make sure your casting device is on the same Wi-Fi
    • Your phone/tablet should be connected to the same router Wi-Fi for reliable casting.
  5. Cast as usual
    • Open your streaming app → tap the Cast icon → select your Chromecast

Method 2: Share GatewayVPN from a Windows PC or macOS to Chromecast

This is a great workaround when router setup isn’t possible, and it avoids the “phone hotspot casting” limitation by making the PC/Mac the Wi-Fi network.

Windows: Share VPN using Mobile Hotspot

  1. Install and sign in to GatewayVPN on Windows
  2. Connect to your preferred VPN location
  3. Turn on Windows Mobile Hotspot
    • Settings → Network & internet → Mobile hotspot → On
  4. Connect Chromecast to the Windows hotspot Wi-Fi (Google Home app)
  5. Connect your casting phone/tablet to the same Windows hotspot Wi-Fi
  6. Cast as usual

macOS: Share VPN using Internet Sharing

  1. Install and sign in to GatewayVPN on macOS
  2. Connect to your preferred VPN location
  3. Enable Internet Sharing in macOS settings (share the VPN-connected interface over Wi-Fi)
  4. Connect Chromecast to the Mac’s shared Wi-Fi (Google Home)
  5. Connect your casting device to the same shared Wi-Fi
  6. Cast as usual

Optional: If you have Chromecast with Google TV, you may be able to install a VPN app directly

If your device is Chromecast with Google TV (Google TV interface), it can support installing VPN apps from the Play Store—unlike older Chromecast models which typically rely on router/network methods.

General steps

  1. On the device, open Google Play Store
  2. Search for your “GatewayVPN” and install it
  3. Sign in, connect to a location, then stream normally
