How To Set Up GatewayVPN on Amazon Fire TV

On Fire TV, you can use GatewayVPN by installing an OpenVPN client app (such as OpenVPN for Android / ics-openvpn) and importing our .ovpn configuration file.

What you’ll need

  • An Amazon Fire TV device (Fire TV Stick / Fire TV Cube / Fire TV television)
  • A GatewayVPN subscription
  • Your GatewayVPN OpenVPN config file (.ovpn) from the GatewayVPN downloads page
  • Your VPN username + password (these are different from your GatewayVPN account login)

Step 1: Download your GatewayVPN .ovpn configuration file

  1. On your phone or computer, open the GatewayVPN downloads page.
  2. Download the OpenVPN configuration files package.
  3. Extract/unzip it (if it downloads as a ZIP), then pick the server/location .ovpn file you want to use.

Step 2: Request your VPN username and password

Because OpenVPN manual setups require separate credentials:

  1. Submit the VPN credentials request form below.
  2. Check your email for the VPN username and VPN password.
  3. Keep them handy—you’ll enter them inside the OpenVPN app when connecting.

Step 3: Install an OpenVPN client on Fire TV

  1. On Fire TV, open Find / Search.
  2. Search for an OpenVPN client (example: OpenVPN for Android (ics-openvpn)).
  3. Select the app and choose Get/Download to install. (These are the standard Fire TV install steps.)

If the exact OpenVPN client you want isn’t available in the store, you may need an alternative OpenVPN app that supports importing .ovpn files (store availability can vary by region/device).

Step 4: Move the .ovpn file onto your Fire TV

You have a few common options—use whichever is easiest for you:

  • Download it directly on Fire TV (for example, by opening a download link in a downloader/browser app)
  • Send it from your phone/PC using a file transfer app
  • USB transfer (only if your Fire TV device supports USB storage)

Goal: make sure the .ovpn file is accessible in Fire TV storage so the OpenVPN app can import it.

Step 5: Import the .ovpn file into the OpenVPN app

  1. Open the OpenVPN client app you installed.
  2. Choose Import Profile / Import Config / Add Profile (wording varies by app).
  3. Browse to your downloaded .ovpn file and select it. (This is the standard import flow for OpenVPN clients.)
  4. Save the profile.

Step 6: Connect using your VPN credentials

  1. Tap the profile you imported.
  2. When prompted, enter your VPN username and VPN password (from the email).
  3. Tap Connect.
  4. Approve any connection prompts.

Once connected, your Fire TV’s traffic will route through the VPN server in that .ovpn file.
